Description

Following many hours of consultation and preparation by Animal Control officers, law enforcement and animal control officers trapped the venomous snake on a north Raleigh porch Wednesday night, ending an eventful 48-hour period that attracted attention throughout North Carolina.

The glue was removed from the cobra's body after being guided into a red bucket and brought to a safe location.

The snake was seen crawling onto a porch of a house on Sandringham Drive earlier in the day. Lifting its head, it was able to see its hood.

After confirming the snake was the one they were trying to capture, Animal Control officers moved the camera crews back.

911 call from that same house sparked the search at the beginning of Tuesday.

The city of Raleigh, N.C., is the state capital. Following hours of consultation and preparation by police and animal control officers, a glue trap ultimately trapped a venomous zebra cobra on a north Raleigh porch Wednesday night, capping an incident that drew widespread attention.

As the glue was slowly removed from the cobra's body, it was placed into a red bucket and taken to a safe location.

As WRAL's cameras captured it earlier in the day, a striped snake slithered out of the siding of a house on Sandringham Drive and onto a porch. A hood was visible wherever it turned its head.

Camera crews had to be redirected after Animal Control officers confirmed it was a snake before moving in to try to capture it.

911 call from that same home sparked the search in the early morning Tuesday.

It was a relief to neighbor Joan Nelson to have the ordeal over.

She said she feels much safer now and is very happy. Having gone outside, I feel as though I can now go on my deck and walk around. Though I do feel a little sorry for the snake.

A zebra cobra has been missing from a north Raleigh neighborhood where this stunted snake is seen.

The snake, a zebra cobra, can spit up to 9 feet and is faster than most snakes, making even a morning walk with the dog scary. The African Snakebite Institute reports that this snake is very dangerous. The venom can cause the nervous system to shut down.

One who is poisoned by the cobra would immediately feel pain, swelling, irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea. Following a heavy fever and breathing problems, you might lose your breath and may die.

Dr. Salina Locke, a veterinarian at Avian and Exotic Animal Care, treats all kinds of animals.

The species of cobras that are found in this area do not bite. The venom is more likely to spray because they are very accurate and go straight for the eye, she said.

Despite the risks involved, Locke does not recommend keeping this snake as a pet.

Most bites occur when a person is sleeping. Research shows that people who are bit may suffer health issues for years.

Police searched a home on 6917 Chamonix Place on Tuesday, near where the cobra was last seen.

There was an animal issue at that home in March. Approximately half a mile away, they spotted the zebra cobra on a porch, prompting them to return on Monday and Tuesday.

The county records indicate that Keith and Rebecca Gifford live at this address. An account linked to Keith Gifford's name features several photos of snakes belonging to his son, Christopher.

Christopher Gifford has more than 460000 followers on TikTok?. His posts claim he has a 7-foot zebra cobra.
